updating the downfall
What (and who) is actually going down / under, when we nowadays talk about the downfall? Are the limits of growth also the limits of our world? And how are we approaching the downfall, how do we speak against the downfall or our way to(wards) it? How does the stance, the dance change at the outermost edge of the speech or discourse? In a time of media hysteria about the crisis, of anonymous natural forces and financial catastrophes, Thomas Jelinek and his guests – prominent end time analysts, downfall-focused art-researchers, as well as common-or-garden losers from next door – invite you to participate in the downfall and take part in the end-game. Not without being aware of the certain pathos in the negotiation of the psychotic liturgy of the present, between congress-, passion- and demonstration-dances, driven by the call to self-empowerment, they open up a public, transdisciplinary space for discussion and artistic experimentation. A performative discourse-space lab in the constantly recurring downfall and reconstruction game. A space for action, in order not to remain mute; an artistic suggestion against the perhaps greatest danger – namely that in the end everything remains unchanged.

PROST
Luiz Simoes & Sabina Simon
Still flowing through the Universe, the electromagnetic wave of 160.2 GHz called Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation is supposed to be the echo of the Very Beginning.
We normally associate the idea of echo as post-something, but hardly conceive it ascause-of, as cause of a new drama that will evoke a new reverberation, producing, maybe, another drama and so on infinitely. An expanding Universe on its way to collapse, is part of an "evolutionary freedom" that perhaps only in the Downfall finds a way to reborn.

Updating the downfall
The year 2012 is announced as the time of an extraordinary conjunction of crucial events. Ancient
remembrances of a forgotten culture remind us the finitude of our time and force the gaze of
modern humanity to anxiously scan the distant, celestial vault of finance in order to interpret the
oracular foreshadows of markets in the light of an eschatological count-down. Everything seems to
match…the fall-down appears to be only a matter of an inevitable alignment of macro-economical
events converging upon the skies of a financially and politically fragile Europe.
Living in a Post-Time
The always more common use of the prefix post- to describe the present historical period not
only reveals a change of paradigm in the way the world is structured and perceived. More then that, a post-time is a time which is suspended between something that is no more, and something that is still not; a time without an own now, or at least a time in which this now can’t be named and discussed properly (without making reference to its being residual with respect to a previous, already ended one.)
Post-modernity, post-colonialism, post-democracy…these terms describe the suspension of an order and yet deny its abolishment, a point of stall in the historical dis-continuum: A post-time which suspends the rules of its passing and freezes itself in this suspension.
The recourse to the prefix post- masks and at the same time reveals the presence of an implicit
interdiction to abandon an order, to renounce a project, to admit a failure. Namely: that the infinite
character of capitalistic progress has come to an end; that the very clock that should have measured
the never-ending growth of human prosperity and civilization has perhaps already reversed his
motion and has become a count-down which measures the rhythm of occidental downfall.
Politically, in what has been called post-democracy, the suspension of time often entails the suspension of democratic rules in the name of an economical state of emergency. The crisis, in its political potential, that is, as a moment of a dramatic choice, is often reduced to a financial momentum in which a series of pragmatic, medicynical financial protocols are necessary in order to slow down the countdown, to level down the slope of a downfalling though, indeed, to buy some more .
If time is money, and money is debt, then the present time, more then any other in history seems to
realize this reasoning in all its logic consequences: That is, time is debt.
What are, in this situation, the possible declinations and gestures, through which to express different
angles of the downfall, in such a way as to underline the “inclination” of such a falling? What kind of thought could be able to think the downfall towards the end, without being at the same time contaminated and affected by – and dragged in – the movement of the very object it is thinking?
And what kind of discourse can restitute this very affection if not one that reflects the inter-diction,
the shame that could express the suspension, the “pendency” – and therefore the anxiety, the fear –
of living in a post-time.
Talking from the end as research approach
With UNTERGANGART: Updating the downfall, prominent end-time analysts, downfall-focused
art-researchers, as well as common-or-garden downfallers are invited to conceive their work as sublimation and elaboration tools of a post-traumatic present ( orphan of its own future): post-performances, post-speeches, post-installations and post-interventions as utterances of a post-discourse which talks us from the end.
A post- artistic suggestion and provocation against the perhaps greatest danger – namely that in
the end, or even after it, everything remains unchanged.

The Stationary Point in the Evolution of a System
Aldo Giannotti 2012
A group of people travels around the city of Vienna on a mini-van, transporting a wooden board (of approx. 3x2 m). Using the architectural structures of the public space – walls, sidewalks, stairs, fountains etc. ) they place the board in such a way as to create, by stepping on it all together, a series of different figures, in which a precarious equilibrium is kept and lost through the changing and reassembling of the bodies’ position.
Aktion / Interspecific Bargain
Leopold Kessler 2012
The intervention AKTION / Interspecific bargain, consists in displaying packages of 3 fishes belonging to 3 different species to the gaze of the public of a supermarket as if they were actual special sales. The performance uses that intrinsic transparency of the AKTION-package and aims at enhancing the feeling of perplexity in front of a product without a name, without a history, indeed, with no sense. As a result, the consumer is implicitly invited to consider consumerism’s mechanisms a little less trustfully, highlighting its imperative character as well as its intrinsic dysfunctions and excesses.
Operación Pavo, Audioguide
Mahony 2012
"Once their novelty had subsided, the remains themselves of a destroyed world fell victim to vermin and neglect. Fewer than one hundred of these objects have been preserved until today."
Operación Pavo thematises the ongoing controversy between the Mexican Museo Nacional de Antropología and the Austrian Museum für Völkerkunde regarding the „Penacho de Moctezuma“ (feather headdress of Moctezuma). Over the years the discussion about the legitimate exhibition place for the object has become a political issue in both countries.
Tu-lips. A Performative Investigation
Gerald Straub 2012
on TV, 3rd of March 2012 20h15 ORF2, ARD, SF Tulip bulbs are signed in the general rehearsal of the Austrian TV show "Musikantenstadl" and partly hidden in the decoration amongst other flowers. The Tulip bulb serves as a metaphoric item for a desire, as an embodiment of contentedness and a fulfillment of the paradisiacal / ideal / idyllic world in an instance of time. On the other hand, the Tulip serves as an instable value; as a metaphor for one of the first speculative bubbles in the financial sector (Netherlands, 1637).
Not yet titled. Branding Intervention in Public Space
Gianmaria Gava / Giorgio Palma 2012
The six photographical subjects of the series Not yet titled capture details of sculptural groups, located in symbolical centres of power in Vienna. As monuments, they usually play an important symbolical role in legitimizing power, letting institutions appear within a mythological context sub specie aeternitatis (under the aspect of eternity). Through an operation of symbolical emptying of such a magic frame, they are reduced to mere icons of an eternally re-actualized past, reflecting – from an immeasurable distance – upon our present, questioning our relationship to it, assuming different postures in the light of the imminent end.
